This guide explains how to manage subcategories in the My Takeaway app. Subcategories sit inside categories to help organise items in more detail. For example, under Pizzas you might have Veg Pizzas / Non-Veg Pizzas, simplifying for customers and staff.
To add a subcategory, you first need to choose the category it belongs to.
- Open the My Takeaway app on your smartphone.
- Tap the “Hamburger” menu (≡) in the top left corner.
- Select Menu.
- Tap the category where you want to add a subcategory (for example Pizzas).
- Tap the “+” icon next to that category.
- Enter the subcategory name (for example Hot Drinks or Cold Drinks).
- (Optional) Enter a short description to help explain the subcategory.
- Use the “+” icon again if you want to add multiple subcategories.
- Tap Save.
Result: Your new subcategory appears under the chosen category and is ready for you to add items.
Best Practice: Keep names simple so customers don’t need to scroll through long lists.
You can update subcategories whenever needed.
- Rename a subcategory
- Go to the category that contains the subcategory.
- Select the subcategory.
- Tap Edit.
- Update the name or description.
- Tap Save.
Result: The new name shows instantly to staff and customers.
- Reorder subcategories
- Go to the category that contains the subcategories.
- Tap Sort Subcategories.
- Tap the “Hamburger” menu (≡).
- Hold the “Drag” icon (⋮⋮) next to the subcategory.
- Move it into the order you prefer.
- Release to confirm.
Result: Customers and staff will see the new order immediately.
- Hide without deleting
If you don’t want a subcategory to show but still want to keep it, mark the items inside as Unavailable.
Best Practice: Use this instead of deleting if you expect to use the subcategory again. - Deleting subcategories
Important: Deleting a subcategory also deletes all items inside it. If you want to keep the items, move them to another subcategory first.
Subcategories can also support promotions and special menus.
- You can create subcategories for offers or seasonal sections (e.g. Weekend Deals or Christmas Specials).
- Subcategories always appear as sections inside their main category, making it easier for customers to navigate.
